Circle Time Song

HOW TO PLAY:

Children stand in a circle, with hands joined. One child is chosen to be the 'Runner', who leaves the ring and walks around the outside of the circle. At the words: "The one I touch", the runner taps the shoulder of a child who becomes the chosen Chaser, who must then leave the circle to try and catch the Runner. If the Runner isn't caught before he reaches his place in the ring, the children cheer and clap hands, and the game starts again. The Chaser from the last game becomes the Runner for the next round.

Formation:
One child is selected as the Froggie, and another as the fly. The Froggie sits in the middle of the ring, with the other children, including the fly, in a joined circle around him/her.The Froggie squats and jumps around in the centre of the ring as the other children join hands and circle to the left (or right, if you prefer) while singing. At the last line, the fly steps into the centre of the ring, at which point the Froggie has to catch him. (They can go outside of the circle for the chase.) A new Froggie is then chosen, and the game repeated.

To Play as a Ring Game:
Children form a ring, holding hands and circling around while they sing the song. At the beginning of the chorus, any children who wish to impersonate the animal in that verse, can spontaneously go into the center of the ring to act it out in pantomime. The children remaining in the circle continue to sing. (Of course, chances are that everyone will be 'acting' and nobody will be 'singing'!)

Do the same for "Fly away, Jill" with the left hand.
When you say "Come back Jack," throw your your right hand over your shoulder again and switch fingers to your index finger (the one with the tape). Do the same with the left hand for "Come back, Jill", and show that the birds came back. The kids are truly amazed that you could make the birds fly away and then come back.

The Muffin Man

FORMATION:
Children form a circle with one person in the centre. Those in the circle dance in a ring around the one in the middle, singing the first verse. They all stand still while the 'middleman' sings the second verse and afterward, he or she chooses one (or more) children to join him/her in the middle of the ring. Continue singing the verses until all children have been chosen. Then all sing the final verse.

How To Make a Three-Cornered Paper Hat:
Start with a double sheet of newspaper folded in the middle. With the fold at the top, fold the corners down to meet in the center. It will make a triangle on top of two rectangle flaps. Fold the flap in the front up and bend the corners over. Turn the hat over and do the same thing with the other flap. Now you have a triangle. Open the hat in the middle. Push the two end points together so the middle pushes out to form a square. The bottom points on the square are now flaps. Fold the front one up so the point meets the top point of the triangle. Turn the hat over and fold up the remaining point.

Learning Tool/Activity
A visitor suggested this learning tool/activity. Use a manilla folder with a drawing of a wagon on the cover and various sheets of primary-coloured paper inside, starting with red.
Cut out the wagon part so you can see the red paper show through the cut out.
For the next verse, remove the red paper so a different coloured sheet shows through, then sing the song replacing 'red' with whatever color is showing.
The children apparently loved to learn the colours like this, and trying to anticipate what the next color would be
